Jade plant problem

Question

Jade plant leaf issue
Hi Will,

I have a large, indoor old jade plant that has developed white on the leaves.  Is this white spider mite?  If so, what is your best advice for treatment?  If not white spider mite, what might it be?

Answer
HI Dave,

Thanks for the photo. Unlikely, but if the white stuff is only under the flowers, then it my be pollen in which case nothing needs to be done.

More likely it is either aphids or mealybugs. If you can see them move, then they are aphids. If they are soft and cotton-like and don't appear to move, then they are mealybugs. Both critters tend to like new growth best so now is a good time to prune back each new stem by a few inches. This will help keep the plant in good shape and will remove a lot of the critters.

Then, thoroughly drench all leaf and stem surfaces with a solution of soapy water. If possible, fill the sink with soapy water, as if you were going to wash dishes by hand. Tip the plant upside down holding your hand over the soil so the plant doesn't fall out of the pot. Swirl the plant around in the soapy water for about 30 seconds. Finally, spray rinse the Jade with clear water.

One treatment usually does the trick if you are good and thorough. However, you should continue to monitor the plant carefully for any signs of their return.
