Jade Plant Problem

Question
I have big yellow mushrooms and mold growing in my Jade Plant pot.  Is this a plant disease and how do I get rid of this?

Answer
Diane,

These mushrooms and molds are natural decomposers; they use the decaying organic matter in the soil to grow.  They are not feeding on your plant's roots, and these are often seen as signs of good soil health.  The soil microbes (and fungi) convert the "locked" nitrogen compounds into usable compounds.  So, the plants benefit from the presence of fungi.

If they are unsightly, then they can be removed without consequence.  The mushrooms will soon wither and dehydrate, but the mold may persist longer.

These are much more common in wooden pots, but can appear on the soil surface in any pot.
