My Jade Plant

Question
Hi Will,

I have a Jade plant that I bought about 5 yrs. ago and needless to say it has quad-droopled in size.  So much that I cannot move it or carry it indoors in the winter.  I am wondering how do I separate it and put it into several pots.
Thanks,
Brooke from Zion National Park

Answer
Hi Brooke,

I strongly recommend that you not try to divide your Jade. It can be done, but it is not easy and is very risky unless you have experience doing it. You could end up losing the entire plant if it is done improperly.

Jades are best kept in small pots and pruned back regularly. Healthy Jade stems can be cut back as much as you like without harming the plant. You could reduce the size of your Jade by two-thirds if you want to. I suggest that you start by pruning back the longest stems by at least one-third and as much as two-thirds. Then prune other stems as much as needed so that you can reduce its size and get it to a shape that you like. Pruning is like getting a haircut - it doesn't do any damage, it only alters the appearance of the plant. No need to be timid.

The pruned off cuttings can be used to propagate other plants. Allow the cuttings to heal in the open air overnight. Then insert the cut ends into small pots filled with a porous, sandy potting mix that you keep slightly damp. Provide lots of warmth and sunlight for best results.

I know this is not the answer you expected. If you are still determined to divide your Jade, let me know and I will do my best to explain how to go about it.

I have written an article on pruning and Jade care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
