Angel leaf begonia with whit spots on leafs.

Question
Dear Will, First I -'d like to thank you for your availability especially re: trouble-shooting. My angle leaf begonia (with white spotted leaves) is seemingly thriving with new leaf sprouts. The problem, brown spots keep appearing...even on fairly new growth. It is in a fairly sunny spot, with watering ever other day. It also has remained in the same pot for a couple years.

Thank-you again for your time and consideration.
Deona

Answer
Hi Deona,

Discoloration of new leaves is usually caused by root damage due to over watering. Even in good light and a relatively small pot, an Angelwing Begonia should not need water every other day. It is best to water only when the top inch or so of soil feels dry to the touch. If the soil does not dry out sufficiently between waterings, then root rot slowly occurs and damaged foliage is the result. If the problem is not corrected in time, all of the roots will rot and the plant will die.

Trim off the damaged foliage, reduce your watering frequency, and look for signs of healthy new growth a couple of weeks from now.

I have written an article on watering plants that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at [email protected].
