leaf fungus

Question
Hello,
I raise Myrtus Communis, (true Myrtle) in central florida.  For years I have been plagued by a type of leaf fungus that I cannot find anything to alleviate this problem.  The tiny new leaves will get small brownish/copper spots on them which eventually kills the leaf and it falls off. Can you help me end this problem once and for all?

Answer
Dear Jane:

Leaf spots on Myrtus Communis are caused by fungi or bacteria. Brown or black spots and patches may be either ragged or circular, with a water soaked or yellow-edged appearance. Insects, rain, dirty garden tools, or even people can help its spread.  Suggest you use disposable latex gloves when removing or treating the infected portions of the plant as well as sterilizing garden tools by wiping with isopropyl alcohol to prevent further spread of the fungus.

Prevention and Control: Remove infected leaves when the plant is dry. Leaves that collect around the base of the plant should be raked up and disposed of. Avoid overhead irrigation if possible; water should be directed at soil level. For fungal leaf spots, use Daconil Fungicide according to label directions.
