Hi Will,
I have taken a couple photos of the plant now which should be more clear. They are attached. Thanks once again, Susanne

Answer
Hi Susanne,

Your plant is an Areca Palm, as I suspected. The mixed yellow and green lower stems with dark lines is perfectly natural and not at all a cause for concern.

Be sure to provide lots of bright indirect sunlight and good air circulation. Water the soil as soon as the surface of the soil feels very dry. This is not a particularly hardy Palm species because it is quite fussy about its light and water requirements. It is also a favored host of spider mites, particularly if it is under stress for any other reason. Do your best, but keep your expectations low for this challenging Palm.

I have written an article on various Palm species, including some that are hardier than the Areca, that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who emails a request to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
