Kentia palm white sticky spots

Question
Hi, I have noticed white sticky spots on some of the leaves on my Kentia palm. I was away for a month, and a friend watered the plant while I was gone. Otherwise the plant looks nice and healthy. Could you please advise me what should I do to help my beautiful Kentia Palm? Thank you very much!!

Answer
Hi Katie,

Kentia Palms are normally quite resistant to pest problems. However, the stickiness you described certainly suggests a scale insect infeststion.

Mix a solution of 5 parts water, 1 part rubbing alcohol and a squirt of liquid soap in a sprayer. Spray all leaf and stem surfaces thoroughly until they are dripping wet. Then rinse it with clear water. If you are very thorough, one treatment shoudl be adequate, but you should remain vigilant for future infestations.

I have written articles on indoor plant pests and on Palm care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
