White spots in my shamrock

Question

Shamrock
Hi Will,

Last month, I got a shamrock with green leaves and white flowers. I placed it 3 meters away from a big window. The window faces southwest. I have been watering the plant every 3-4 days and I realized the plant was not doing so well and going yellow. So I added fertilizer and it did improved the situation. However, I have noticed that there has been more and more white spots with black dots on the leaves. I checked the bottom of the pot and it looks fine and the soil also looks fine. Could this be a fungus issue? If so, can re-potting the plant be a solution? Thanks a lot!

Answer
Hi Clau,

Repotting is rarely a solution to any plant problem. This is not a fungus issue either.

I recommend that you move your Oxalis closer to the window, by about a meter. You are also probably watering too often. Wait until the top quarter of the soil feels dry before adding any water. Use fertilizer every sparingly - every other month at half strength. Finally, if your local tap water is hard, switch to filtered or distilled.

Although, Oxalis leaves are subject to blemishes under the best of circumstances, if you follow the above recommendations, I think you will see improvement in your plant.
