where do bagworms live

Question
On the pine/ spruce trees I think I have the bag worms it looks like pine cone but is green/reddish colored like a cocoon but hard when opened up it has sections in it with holes for the worms.  Do they burrow into the tree bark as well as eat the needles?  Then come back out the following year or are they in the soil around the tree?

Answer
Bagworms are not hard but made of silky webbing with bits of the dead foliage on them. They only eat the leaves and do not borrow into the trunk. Does not sound like bagworms. Can you attach a picture of what you are seeing? From the description I can not determine what it might be. Thanks!
