Newly planted conifers - can I save them?

Question
Hi, I recently purchased 100 conifers on the internet, they arrived in four boxes and the roots were protected in straw.   I soaked the roots before planting, quite strange though, there was no soil on the roots?  For the first week the trees looked lush and like they had taken but now they look like they are drying out and if they almost have a dust covering them.

I water them daily because they look dry and almost like they are dying - Can these trees be saved and what can anyone suggest? The soil in my area is very 'clay' like.  I planted them because it was far more cost effective than a fence and purchased them being 5ft tall each.

Any suggestions would be greatly received! I really dont want them to die.

Answer
Conifer especially pine will be sold as bare root. Meaning they do not have soil around them when packed. These are used in Forestry for the plantations. I think maybe you are over watering them. Once planted and there is not a drought they will survive and grow without additional water. As long as the roots did not dry out before they were planted the survival rate is usually 80-90%
I would back off the water and see what happens.
