Question

pitcher plant
Can you identify this plant? I bought it at a garden center and it did very well for several years, then it just didn't come back one spring. I have tried to replace it and bought similar appearing plants throught internet sites. However, they never grow as dense and short and squatty as this one did. The pitchers lay on the ground instead of being upright. This is the only picture I have, so it doesn't show the entire plant well.

Answer
This is Sarracenia purpurea ssp. venosa.  It is native to northern Florida through North Carolina.  There are numerous reasons why a plant doesn't make it through dormancy, but it should grow well for you in your region.  For more information about growing this and other types of Sarracenia read our care sheets online:

Good growing!
