Slime mold?

Question
Hi guys,

I have 3 nepenthes and a flytrap that are doing very well, but they seem to have developed some sort of slime on the potting medium (not on the actual plants). It's butterscotch colored and sort of looks like shiny jelly. Is this some sort of slime mold? Is it harmful to my plants?  Thanks guys!

Answer
Hi Lane,

The Slime mold isn't harmful to the plants directly, but it it gets too thick it can cover small plants.  Simply scrape it off.  Doing lots of top watering will prevent this, and you should be top watering the Nepenthes anyway.  Your flytrap will have no problem with this if it's outside (which is where it should be if you live in Western Oregon) since the rain will wash it off.

Good Growing!
