Slime Mold Powder

Question
In response to: Question
Same problem in MA as man in TN 7/5/07. I sprayed the yellow mound with my hose last week & the black powder came out. Today there are 3 more yellow mounds & the black powder from the 1st bursted mound is ALL over the flowers around it. What is this stuff??? I've never seen it or had it before. I dont want to spray the new mounds & spread the powder. What else can I do?
......
I also have this and I sprayed it and it released the brown powder and I ended up with it up my nose and in my eyes and on my skin. Is it harmful in any way to people or pets when inhaled or having direct contact like that?

Answer
Hi Abigail, the spores (powder) could aggravate your allergies so I'd wear a dust mask if you have outdoor allergies. Try to blast the slime mold apart with water as soon as you see it start before the spores have developed.  If it's starting to change color, you can get under it with a flat shovel and bag it for disposal.  It really isn't harming anything.  It feeds on bark for the carbon.  Jim
