Soil mold

Question
Hello James,
I have written you before about this issue and tried the things you told me to do but nothing has worked. I kept getting a white mold growing on top of the soil in my houseplant pots. My house is actually low humidity and I am careful about proper watering. As per your suggestion I have been using Consan 20, I have been spraying the top of the soil, the base of the plants and the pot itself but I still keep getting the mold. I have also repotted several plants to try and get rid of the mold but it still keeps coming back. I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks
Tracy

Answer
Hi Tracy, Consan is a sterilizer, it cleans up the problem but doesn't stop it from coming back.  If you soil drench the plants, clean the pots, saucers, watering cans, plant stands, windows and window sills, you're clean until spores start it again.  I think control is what you'll have, not cure.  This is what I would do...
Add Consan or a good soil fungicide to your water every time you water.
Aerate the soil surface frequently.
Clean the pots with a clorox wipe weekly.
Clean the saucers with a bleach wash weekly.
Fungus grows on decomposing organic matter and most are not harmful to your plants but you may have less trouble if you change potting soils.  Avoid bark based soils and stick to lightweight container mix type soils.
Covering the soil with inorganic material like pea gravel may be an acceptable solution...it just hides the fungus.
Jim
