QUESTION: I have what I believe is a Peruvian Apple cactus.  I got it from an old neighbor who said it was a cut arm from one he had in NY.  I want to share this cactus with family; what's the right way to cut an arm and use it for propagation?  Also, when is the right time to do it?

ANSWER: Luis,

Anytime will work, but now is best. You can cut it into 8" sections (minimum) and let them dry out for at least a couple of weeks. Once the cuttings have "healed", they can be planted in soil. Make sure only to water when the soil is dry. It will take up to a month or more to root, so be patient.

QUESTION: Greg,
Thank you for your answer.  I do need additional information.  Where do I cut?  If I'm cutting an arm that grew above another, do I cut right in the middle of the "joint", or above/below?  Thank you.

Just make sure the part that you cut is green. If there is any "wood" in it (which happens near the base of the plant and at joints), it won't root. So, you can cut above or below the joint, just not right at it. Good luck!
