D. Binata Propagation

Question
I have D Binata diaforma (giant staghorn) and a D. Binata Multiforma and I'd like to know the best way for propagation of these two Binata's.  I'm getting ready to do my spring replanting of all my plants and figured if i could propagate via root cutting or some other way that would be easy while the plant was out of it's pot I'd do it then.

Thanks
Alex

Answer
Hi Alex,

Both Drosera binata dichotoma, and D. binata multifida strike from root cuttings very easily.  The basic technique is to cut off a couple of thick sections of root from a larger plant.  Sometimes these break off just from removing the plant from a pot.  Cut them into about 1 1/2 inch sections.  Place these on the surface of some wet peat moss in a clear container or seed propagating tray.  Be sure to spray with a fungicide. Cover this with a transparent cover and place under fluorescent lights.  New plantlets will start forming in about 3-4 weeks.  When they have gotten about 2 inches tall they can be transplanted.  Be sure to harden them off a little at a time before taking them out of the propagating tray.

Good Growing!
