cutting back ivy

Question
I am wanting to cut back some ivy at the front entryway of our home.  Is fall the best time to cut it back and can I cut it back all the way to the ground to get rid of the woody stems? We keep it cut back from climbing up the house and it is in the flower bed by itself.

Answer
You can cut it back any time. However, fall would be better since you probably won't be out much in winter when its going to look bad and then it will come back fast in spring.
Yes you can cut all the way back. English Ivy is very difficult to hurt. Even 'Round-up' herbicide barely makes a dent in it.
