moring glorys

Question
Hello, a couple quick questions. I live in Denver (zone 5) and want to know when to start these seeds. I have Morning Glorys and Holloyhocks. Both from seed. I do have one of those Jiffy counter green houses for seeds. I dont know when to start the seeds & when to plant outside. Also any special preperation for the seeds to get them to be successful. Thanks a lot.

Answer
You can start both of them now if you have a soil cable to warm the jiffypots, but it would probably be better to wait a month.  Both of these have deep taproots; they don't like transplanting and will recover more quickly if you wait.

The morning glories especially need lots of heat.  To speed germination, take a razor blade and cut a notch into the seeds, then soak them for a few hours in warm water and plant them, 1 or 2 to a pot max.

Hollyhocks started now and grown with care stand a good chance of blooming this summer.  Like Morning Glories, they need warmth to germinate, which you can get with soil heating cables.  They can take 2-3 weeks to sprout; be patient.

Cool air or soil for either of these plants threatens to cause "damping off", an epidemic of seedlings that is prevalent in cool soil.  If you see the new sprouts keel over at the base, as though the stem had simply collapsed as the base, the soil is too cold; raise the temperature immediately and leave it there.

These should go in the ground as soon as possible; a heating coil will keep the soil outside warm enough to generate early blooms.  Remember to dig the holes deep to fit the tap roots without any adjusting.  They also need bell jars or plastic covers to stay warm.  Demanding?  Sure - the price we pay for this wonderful obsession.  Good luck - sounds marvelous.
