Vegetable seeds; Germination

Question
hi mike i have taken your advice about the vegetable seeds but i have another question for you how can you tell when your seedlings are about to emerge.  this is from seeds in the soil.  i am wondering because the first time i tried them they didn't grow not the right conditions and i know that but this time the soil is soaking up water and the box which is a black growing box has gotten alot heavier and this is without adding water to the bottom of the container.  so i am wondering some tell tale signs that my seeds are about to grow into seedlings thank you for your time.

Answer
Chris, there is no way to tell until they break the soil. The best barometer is to check the packet for average germination time. Some seeds, such as lettuce, take 3 days, while other seeds can take as long as 21-30 days. The weight of the container is strictly predicated upon the amount of moisture the soil is holding. Whether or not the seed is about to germinate has no bearing on the weight.

Have a good weekend.

Mike
