Fountain grass from seeds

Question
Hi Tom,
I collected seeds of Fountain grass and want to establish the plant in my backyard. What time should I start the seeds, in the pot or outside, specifics of seeding, soil? I am in Boston, MA.
Thank you and best wishes-Grigory

Answer
Hello Grigory,
Thanx for your question.  Chances are, the seeds you collected are the result of hybrids.  So, you will have success in germinating them but doubtfully, they will have any type of resemblence to the parent plant.  It's still fun to try to see what you come up with.  Allow the seeds to dry for a couple of weeks and then, next year about 4 weeks before the last frost, press the seed gently into warm, moist potting soil, keep the pot warm, under lights and the soil moist but not soggy.  The seeds will germinate in less than 10 days as long as temps are maintained above 75 degrees F.  I hope this helps.
Tom
