salal propagation

Question
what is a good potting soil mix to use for gaultheria shallon(salal) seeds. and do the seeds need to be cold stratified and how do i do that?

Answer
Hi Tanis,
Thanx for your question.  You previously posted a similar question and I answered that question.

A good potting soil mix would be most potting soil mixes one can buy at Walmart or DIY(do-it-yourself) stores.  You can also buy soil less mixes at local nurseries that are disease free and you don't have to worry about fungus or mold.

Yes, these seeds require a 3-5 month cold stratification period. Cold stratification means that you place the seeds in a potting soil mix, dampen it and then expose it to temperatures below 40 degrees for an extended period. One big fun thing for me has been to stratify iris seeds and watch the seedlings come up in the warm period.

I hope my information helps you!

Tom
