Answer
Dear Sara, It looks like the main thing wrong with your spider plant is that it isn't getting enough light.  Since this plant is a special one for you here is what I would recommend.  You should probably repot the plant, but put it in a pretty small container, since if you put it in a very large pot it will have more trouble growing roots.  Smaller containers will stay at a more even moisture level: when the plant dries out, the pot will be dry.  Large containers may have a small area around the plant that dries, but the rest of the soil will be damp and that is not a good thing.  So get a nice small, clean pot, one with drainage holes, to put it in and tuck it in firmly.  If you want, you could drench the soil with NEEM, an organic product that kills insects, fungus, and mites and is very helpful for small gardens and should be available in your area.  This will help to keep the fungus out.  Water the plant, and never let any water remain standing in any drip pan underneath your plants, because that will cause root rot.  Be sure to let the plant dry out thoroughly before you water again. Then you need to put your plant in a bright area but not direct sun, like a west or south facing window, a balcony or porch would also be good.  If you are in an apartment, try a grow light or other bright window or light source.  Your plant should slowly show signs of recovering.  I hope this information helps you and you are able to save your plant.  Please feel free to write me any time.  By the way, in answer to your other questions, you can put a plant in water when it has been in soil when you are trying to help it grow roots, but it has mixed results.  You can add some rooting hormone to the water, but I would try a very light feeding only if you want to add fertilizer at this time because you don't want to burn the roots.  Good luck to you.  Melissa
