Spider plant and root rot

Question
I just saved half my spider plant from root rot.I had it in African Violet soil and now I have it in a cup of water hoping it will recover but I have no clue what I'm doing. Please help the plant is really special to me

Answer
Dear Barbara, Ok, the first thing I would do is get it out of the water.  Since you had root rot, make sure that all the damaged area is removed, because it won't grow back.  Then you should douse the plant in a fungicide to prevent further damage.  Check at your local nursery or feed store, there are several products available.  A popular one these days is NEEM because it is nontoxic and effective against pests and diseases.  The next thing to do is plant it in good houseplant soil.  Don't use African Violet soil because it is too rich and can cause it to rot.  Place the plant in an area with good light and allow the plant to dry out between watering.  Also, very important, if you have a drip tray under the plant, ALWAYS empty the tray after the water has run through.  Plants in standing water develop root rot because the roots suffocate from too much water and not enough air.  This should completely fix your problem, so long as you still have some viable roots.  Please let me know if I can assist you further.  Good luck, Melissa
