Question
Hello Darlene ..

I have a spider plant that I bought a month ago
it is white in center with green stripes
it has 4 babies they are large but there is no root
The parent plant and the babies show no signs of growth
can I place the babies now in September in a new pot with a soil while they still attached to their parent even if the have no root yet and are not growing?
or I have to wait until spring or summer ?

and I want to know is there a dormant period for spider plant ?

and finally can I water spider plant with 7-up ?

thank you so much

Answer
Sally,

Spider plants like lots of sun. It would stop growing if it is not in a very sunny window or if it has not been fertilized may also be why it is not growing. It should be watered only when it is dry and it should be in a pot with drain holes and a drain tray under it and the drain tray should not be constantly full. Empty in an hour after you water it.

Yes, you can place the babies in a new pot with soil in it while they still attached to their parent even if the have no roots yet. There is a dormant period in January, February and March due to the short days but it should not be going into that yet unless it has not been getting enough sun.

Why would you want to water it with seven up? If it is the sweet version it will attract insects and cause root rot. It will also cause mold in the soil. A fizzy drink that could help plants is seltzer water, according to gardenguides.com, which cites a 2002 study. The University of Colorado study found that plants watered with club soda grew quickly and enjoyed other benefits because there are more nutrients in club soda than in regular tap water.

Sugar-free soda pop would not be as bad for plants as regular soda, since these drinks use artificial sweeteners instead of sugar. But there are not as many benefits to using sugar-free soda versus ordinary water or club soda.

Good luck with your spider plant!
Darlene
