little white cotton-like balls

Question
I have 2 large indoor banana plants with little white cotton-like balls on the leaves.  What is it?  They are in a room which gets lots of sun like but when our heater or a/c is on is the first room to get very hot or very cold.  Could that cause the little balls?  Is it a disease?  What should I do?

Answer
I would take a toothpick and dig into the cotton balls. I think you may have an insect called a meally bug or cottony aphids.  If there is some liquid inside when you squish one of them, then I would think that is the problem.  It depends on whether these plants produce bananas for eating as to how we would control them.  Please respond with that information and I will recommend a control after you determine if it is indeed an insect.
