what age do they bloom?

Question
My son sent me a flask of orchids for Christmas.  I have put most of  them in their own  own pots. How long will it be before the are old enough to bloom?

Answer
Calesta, you certainly have undertaken a unique challenge.  I would have suggested that you pot them all together in the same community pot, but would not suggest you unpot them to do so.  These young seedlings grow quite slowly (depending upon the type) and are more subject to fungal and bacterial infections than mature plants. If they are phalaenopsis seedlings, it can take 3-4 years to grow to blooming size under ideal conditions.  They need to be kept warmer than older plants.  Some types of orchid seedlings can take up to 7 years to grow to blooming size.
