non fruit mulberry tree

Question
planted tree last year . this year leaves came out deformed not full, edges curled up. later in the season normal leaves have appeared. tree trunk is showing areas that are split open at the bottom and in the middle. not growing very much. any help is appreciated thanks. i live in utah.

Answer
Without being able to see the tree it is hard to say.  However, anytime there are splits or cracks in the trunk of a tree it is not a good thing.  If the splits and cracks go deep into the trunk leaving a cavity it is possible that the tree will not survive too many more years.  The cracks may also weaken the tree and make it more susceptible to wind throw.  There is nothing that can be done for cracks in the bark of a tree.  Do not attempt to paint over or cover up the cracks as this makes an environment favorable for bacterial and fungal diseases to move.  All you can do is wait and see if the tree will heal itself.  Good Luck.
