Blue Boy & Blue Girl Holly Mold

Question
I have a hedge in my front yard that consist of both Blue Boy & Girl Holly bushes, I have noticed that there appears to be mold on the berries and leaves and under appears to be what looks like aphids, can you suggest a spray for them?

Answer
The aphids suck the plant juices from the plant and some deposit a waxy material. They secrete a sticky substance called honeydew and a sooty mold will grow on the honeydew. I would either use a systemic insecticide spray and cover both sides of the leaves with the spray or treat the soil around the bushes with an insecticide called Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub insect control. This would be my choice since the material will last longer than the spray. The roots will pick up the insecticide and transport it to the leaves and when the aphids suck the juices they will be killed. You should be able to get this at your local nursery/garden type store.
