Blue Girl Holly

Question
Any idea what would make my previously healthy (planted this summer, 24 inches high) suddenly drop leaves in a pile? They have turned brown, curled up and fallen off. It's concentrated on certain branches; others aren't affected. Proabably about 20% of plant is affected. And it was just starting to make beautiful berries!

Answer
Pam:
Leaf drop can be a result of a root and/or soil related stress. Things to consider: Be sure it is getting enough water (especially if it has been exceptionally hot/dry where you are). A good deep, but infrequent watering is best. Also, the plants' roots could have been compacted while in the pot- thus the roots are root bound in the ground. Be sure to examine the affected branches closely for physical damage, like chewing or other physical damages.  For the sort term, prune out the dying branches and be sure on the water thing.

Steve
