Choice of Plants Indoors

Question
Hi Ms Melissa,

In lieu of Lunar Chinese Year, I'm considering to buy some nice plants for my balcony. However, I'm always stumped at the plethora of plants offered and being a green horn, I may not be able to make a wise decision. I'm looking for perennial plants that can thrive in my house conditions described as such: High-rise apartment with limited spaces(level 22), windy nights at times, does not receive much afternoon sunlight.

Answer
Dear Alfredo, This is a very interesting question.  Obviously there are many suggestions I could make, and basically anything from a well-stocked greenhouse would do well with someone who is as knowledgeable about houseplants such as yourself.  But I think that would be a terrible suggestion.  Let me suggest instead a way to make this a more special occasion.  If you are of Chinese origin, or there is a particular province you feel associated with, perhaps a native plant that can be grown as a houseplant from that region would be of more interest.  Another suggestion would be some type of plant that seems to symbolize China such as a bonsai or jade plant.  Or another way to go would be to get something spectacular, such as a fragrant orchid (suggestions would be some of my favorites Brassavola nodosa or Neofinetia falcata).  The Brassavola is known as "lady of the night" and has a mesmerizing fragrance as soon as it becomes dusk which lasts until dawn.  I always grew mine indoors with moderate light or outside but not in direct sun.  Try to get something in bloom or almost ready to bloom.  Or if you get a bonsai, get a well established tree and preferably not a juniper because the other trees hold much more year round interest.  Let me know what you come up with, or if you are leaning towards some area perhaps I can help with more specific suggestions.  I am anxious to hear your thoughts on this.  Happy New Year!  Melissa
