poisonous plants

Question
I want to buy some easy to care for house plants (I have great morning light!), but I'm worried about my cat. In the past she has taken some bites from plant leaves and I have heard that many common plants can hurt or kill pets, if they are ingested. Can you reccommend some safe, hearty plants and the best place to purchase them?
Thank you so much.
Martha

Answer
Hi Martha
Good question!  As a dog lover myself, I am always aware of the type of plants that I buy.
Here is a great website that lists plants safe around animals:

http://www.sniksnak.com/plants.html

You may need to copy and paste the link.

You need to be careful with the popular plants, the pothos, philodendron, and peace lily's, are toxic, also dieffenbachias are toxic, Chinese evergreens are toxic also.
Try the ponytail plant (aka elephant foot fern), the hoya (aka wax plant) is very nice, jade plants are very easy and fine with animals, some of the palm trees are okay, just double check the list to make sure, peperomia's are pretty.  The 'lipstick vine' and 'goldfish vine' are very nice hanging plants and are okay, and the sanseverria is a great floor plant.

As far as to where to buy the plants, there is no 'good' place, 'bad' place really.  Just check the plant over carefully for bugs, etc.  Look at all of the plants to see how they are cared for.  Sometimes you can get some great deals at grocery stores.

Good Luck Martha
Leslie
