soil choice

Question
I bought a large round combination bowl in Portland last summer with your tags and brochure attached. It says to buy replacement soil from you, each year. But which one? You have too many choices and this is my first experience with carnivorous plants.
Thanks,
Eve

Answer
Hi Eve,

You are probably fine to leave all of the plants in the bowl one more season.  Since it is a large container, you can go a couple of years.  Just be sure to remove any weeds that have gotten in there and trim any dead leaves off of the pitcher plants.

When it comes time to replace soil next year, our standard mix is what's in the container.  All this is is peat moss and perlite in equal quantity.  If you mix your own, the important thing is to make sure that nothing else is in the mix; no compost, no fertilizer, no garden soil, or potting soil.  Carnivorous plants like their soil devoid of nutrients.

Good Growing!
