unknown nocturnal animal digging holes

Question
I live in a surburban neighborhood in Houston, Texas.  I have some unknown nocturnal animal(s) digging holes in my flower beds around my deck; actually most of the holes appear to go under my deck.  I have a small pond near these beds with some Koi and goldfish.  The fish are never bothered.  I cover the holes during the day and the next day they are opened again.  Any idea of what kind of animal I am dealing with?  Could these be opossums or rats?

Answer
I would need more information on the size of the holes and the extent of the damage but likely options are skunk or armadillo. Raccoons can dig holes but normally they peel back sod to get to grubs and worms. Also I think your fish would have been attacked first.
