digging, holes in the yard

Question
I have been fighting this thing for about 6 months, I hear that ground hogs hibernate this time of year, but can never see this thing, it comes early mornings, digs up my flower garden and recenly started on my back yard, just digs around, doens't damage too much, just digs around the plants, mulch in the garden, I live in columbus, ohio, big back yard with s woods at the very end of it, please tell me what can be doing this

Answer
Hi Ron,

I'm not familiar with Ohio, but if it were here in Missouri, it could be several possible animals... and groundhog would not be among them. Groundhog dig big burrows but eat plant tops. Digging in the ground for food might be: armadillo, skunk, opossum, raccoon, fox, wild turkey or several other smaller wild birds.  Even cats, coyote or dogs at times. Look for tracks. Raccoon and opossum have hand-like prints. Armadillo leave a tail drag track. Skunk, fox and coyote have dog-like tracks that vary in assending size. Cat prints don't show the claws. Birds typically leave a scratch-back pattern rather than a dig down. If you want to be rid of: Armadillo, skunk, opossum, fox or coyote; check out my website where I offer electronic deterrents that work very well.
