Black Mites in herb garden

Question
I am starting a herb garden and I found small Black mites with white spots.  When I try to pick one up they jump around.
I have Parsley, Chives, Basil, Rosemary, Marjoram and Thyme sprouting along with a Garlic plant that from this forum should deter some pests.  The soil I belive is a coconut fiber blend from the kit.  The question is should I purge the whole garden and start fresh or wait it out and see what damage they do?

Answer
I would definitely not purge the garden. Instead, I would wait it out and see if there are any signs of preliminary damage. If so, then you need to take action.

I always advocate organic pest controls, especially in the vegetable garden. I would start with an insecticidal soap. That should take care of the problem. If not, then I would resort to pyrethrum or rotenone. These organic solutions are derivatives of plants and have no adverse affect on humans or pets. They are contact sprays, so you would need to spray them during the day when the insects are active.
All three of these controls can be purchased at most garden centers or on-line through companies such as Planet Natural or Gardens Alive.

I hope this answered your question. Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
