Perennial Garden

Question
QUESTION: I am in the process of planting a garden in large garden (Appx 28'x14') in my front yard. I have a crepe myrtle tree in the center of the bed. I want a variety of daylilies and was thinking of two "Pinky Winky Hydrangeas" I don't know what will do well with the daylilies. I have clay soil, and the bed is in the sun. Since the bed is on a slight slope, should I plant some type of ground cover? I am really lost and need some help.

Lee

ANSWER: Hi Lee,

Answer
Hi Lee,
Thanx for your question.  The daylilies and the hydrangeas sound fine together.  How about some hostas underneath the crape myrtle?  Some good ground covers could include a number of different sedums or delosperma (hardy ice plant).  Below is a link to pictures of sedum ground covers

Other plants you may want to consider or are you just looking at a daylily bed with the hydrangeas and the crape myrtle with a sedum ground cover?

Iris, lamb's ear, hardy hibiscus, hollyhock, Asiatic lilies, oriental lilies, coreopsis, hardy phlox, poppies, achillea/yarrow.  Think of spring bulbs like crocus, tulips, hyacinths and daffodils for spring color and mums and asters and sedum autumn glory for fall color.  I hope this helps.
Tom
