I am planning to plant a formal herb garden this spring.  we live in central ohio.  the location i have available gets sun from noon until evening.  is this enough sun.  we have a french formal home.  do you have any suggestions for plants.  thank you

Kip:
Normally herbs need morning sun first. Herbs don't do as well if sun is from noon on. Give them as much morning sun as possible.

Thank you.  I do realize it is better for AM sun, but this is the only place i have.  it is behind my garage which blocks the sun until about noon.  Is there anyway to have succuss in this area ?

Thank You again,

Kip

Kip:
Some herbs have grown well with this amount of sun. They will lean more toward to east. You can keep them pruned to get them to grow in a neater position. Keep pruned every 3 weeks. Take at least 1/3 of the new growth on every branch. Pruning will promote more growth where you can shape your plants. Don't be afraid of pruning!

Thank You again,

Thanks for your suggestions. Do you have a suggestion for the border.  I have been told germander is good to make a formal border.  I will use this is my sun problem is OK.  I know boxwwods are good but too expensive for my pocket to make a 12 x 6 border all around.  Again, I am going for a formal herb garden.  Very neat and tidy. I have been reading books and the knot pattern seems great, but for me being a beginner seems a little too much.  Suggestions welcome.  Thank You.  Kip

Kip:
It is true about germander in formal gardens. Keepig them prune will make them fuller and neat. I don't know about the sun. Some herbs do surprisely well with that amount of sun, but no info on how much. This will be a trial & error garden. Check every 3 days for it's growth.

Oh yes! When you get your plants, break loose the soil on the bottom of the plant and all sides also. Roots should have freedom when starting and they will take quicker. Use no chemical fertilizer. Organic is better. If you use chemical, only 1/2 of recommended dose.  Feed every 3 weeks and in morning before noon or after sun has set.
