herb garden munching

Question
wow, it only took about 4 nights for something to completely devour our basil, oregano, and two kinds of parsley. holes at first, then what looks like biting and pulling. leaves only. my wife says she sees footprints. earwigs common in the area, but so are opossums, skunks, squirrels, coyotes, rats, mice, etc....

Ideas? Advice? The herbs are right outside the back door, and we're trying to avoid ugly wiring or other physical barriers.

Thanks!
d

Answer
Hi Darren

At night and pulling as well as eating sounds like either deer or rabbit by my experience.  Groundhog are day animals.  Those are the only 3 I've experienced with herb raiding.  I don't have good answers for rabbits or groundhog other than live cage traps.  Good for other possibliities as well.  For deer I can help.  I make very effective electronic deterrents.  Here is my website.  Contact me if you have any questions.  Deer can walk around the edges and often not leave obvious tracks since they can reach in a few feet.
