fencing

Question
QUESTION: I have a chipmunk problem in my garden -they eat all my tomatoes-
I'm building a new fence that is like a cage- will 1"x1" vinyl coated wire be good- Im afraid to  go smaller for fear of cutting out too much light. Are there any other solutions?

Best,
Janet

ANSWER: Dear Janet:

Using 1"x1" grid fencing will provide limited control of the chipmunk pest. Suggest you consider 1/2"x1/2" or 1/4"x1/4" grid fencing.  Another alternative; if you have already invested in 1 inch grid fencing is to overlay a cloth or polyethylene mesh barrier over the fencing to provide an additional layer of protection since I believe many chipmunks may be able to squeeze through a one inch grid fence.  And, still another alternative or supplemental deterrent is the use of an ultrasonic device that emits annoying high frequency sounds undetectable by humans yet perceptible by animals. Information from one of the internet suppliers of such devices can be found at this URL:

In addition, recommend you do an internet search for "ultrasonic pest repellents" to provide you with a selection of alternatives.

Good luck!

QUESTION: Would a mesh overlay that is 2 feet high around the peripheries of the fence be high enough?

Answer
Dear Janet:

Re: Your follow-up question

The mesh overlay at 2 feet high will still be susceptible to climbing chipmunks. If you have a severe infestation of chipmunks; you may want to consider completely enclosing the top and sides of your tomato patch with the mesh overlay. Or, perhaps as a secondary precaution use an ultrasonic repellent device.
