Question -
i live in Nottingham, England and when i tried to put grass in my back garden it died. i think this is because my fence is quite high so i need a lawn which can cope with being in the shade. Can you recommend a type of lawn?
Answer -
Fine fescues (hard, chewing, creeping red) is your best bet. However, under certain conditions especially consistently moist places on the north sides of tall fences it may be a loosing battle and some places grass simply can not grow. If this applies to your area, then consider planting a shade garden instead of trying grass. I know this was not what you wanted to hear, but from experience I can tell you.. it is a sometimes a loosing battle.

Thankyou for your reply. What do you mean by the term "shade garden"

Answer
Grass is by definition sun loving. There are shade tolorant cultivars, but even so, these will do much better in full sun than mostly shade.

There are several garden plants which appreciate shady, moist spots, in fact they will do very well there.

These includes: Hostas, Ferns (try lady ferns, ostrich ferns, cinnamon fern, and christmas fern), Toad Lilies, Tirella, and even annuals such as caladium, impatiens, coleus, and begonias.
