Question
I had a landscaper put dirt, sod down on a very rocky are. How with out pulling the whole thing out can I have more dirt to make the grass grow better?

Answer
I'd like to invoke that old Gardener's saying, Better late than never.  But I'm not so sure this is going to work.  It all depends on the quality of 'topsoil' that was put down, how deep it is, and what kind of climate you live in.

Top dressing with Humus or Compost will only temporarily bury your Grass.  A thin layer, of course, but it's been done, and it would work.  Trouble is, your Grass may not get it deep enough, fast enough.  And in the Summer, as temps soar, it may just be too much to ask of the fragile root system.  At this point, I think all you can do is topdress and hope for the best.

DO NOT topdress with anything called 'topsoil'.  This kind of dirt, no matter what you pay for it, can be anything the cat dragged in.  Get Organic Compost and/or Humus instead.  At least these will be nutrients-packed, which will strengthen your Root System.

Your zipcode might help to predict the future here.  Right now you could be anywhere on the planet.
