Florida Stickers or Sand Spurs

Question
I have a problem with getting rid of sand spurs in my lawn.  My  wife has worked hard in trying to pull up all that she finds.  One of our problems is that our next door neighbor has Sand Spurs and never pulls them or treats for them.  There 's no way to control or get totally rid of them.  Is there a treatment that will help eliminate these weeds?

Regards,

Michael Collum

Answer
Michael:

To treat for sand spurs is a two step process:

Post emergent herbicides are MSMA and DSMA, on soils above 52 deg F and air temp of 75 deg F.  Spray every six weeks March through September.

Pre-emergent herbicides are PreM, Surflan, Amaze, Weed & Grass Preventor and Weed Stoppere.

The best preventative is a healthy, thick lawn.  Pre-emergents may be the best tool for invading seeds from neighbor's yard, until your turf is lush and thick.

Best wishes.
