Using sugar to control weeds

Question
I live in Middle Tennessee (Nashville Area) and I have been reading about using sugar on lawns to control weeds. Can you give me any information about this process? What kind of sugar and how much to apply. Can this also be used in the flower beds?
Thank You
John

Answer
Hi John,

I'm actually pretty surprised that this question comes up as much as it does. I don't know who's out there propagating this myth, but sugar does not control weeds. It's that simple. Believe me, I'd be the first one on the "Pro-Sugar" bandwagon if it did, but it doesn't. You can go ahead and give it a shot if you want. Sugar's cheap. But I believe your energy would be better spent doing something more constructive.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
