Sugar for weed control

Question
Hi Charlotte,
Forgot to mention that our front yard is bermuda (not the horrid bermudagrass overtaking in the backyard) and we also applied a good amount of sugar over the front yard weeks ago which had dollar weed (round leaf, I am assuming is).  There seems to be no change here either.  Neither front nor back yard have had chemicals recently.
Thanks again, Ruth

Hi Charlotte,

Several weeks ago now we applied sugar over our lawn and used even a greater amount than the ratio you suggested.  We applied it over the new sod pieces and in between where there are bare places due to last year's drought and die-off of our augustine grass.  There were many weeds and hand-pulled a lot and left a lot hoping to see the weeds weaken and die.  However, though we have been using the soaker hose a lot in place of the sprinkler system, the weeds (nut grass, bermudagrass/coastal?, etc.) seem to be flourishing.  Should we have covered all the bare places completely with new sod, or was that our mistake in expecting the new sod patches to fill in the bare places, and so encouraging more weed growth?  Where should we go from here.
Thanks again, Ruth

Hi Ruth.
The coastal and burmuda would thrive, because they are grasses, not weed grasses. they like a rich soil. the nutgrass should have died out though, unless you used a fertilizer. That would have killed all the microbes you nourished with the sugar.
St. Augustine will eventually overpower the burmuda, and coastal, because coastal is a variety of burmuda.
The only way to get the burmuda and coastal out now, is to dig it all out.
Those are grasses that are sold because many people like the thinner bladed grasses.
What kind of grass did you sod in, and have you used chemicals on the lawn?

Answer
Hi again;
really don't understand that unless, your soil was just depleted enough of minerals that the sugar was not enough. when I started with the sugar, i had good, loose soil, and my grass was very healthy, and the sugar just boosted everything along.
A really good weed and feed is corn gluten.
Howard garrett has a video on that on his site.
Wish I could send you the video, but you just can't access it without a membership.
I gave you my email address. Write me, and I will see if I can send a link so you can watch the video.
