sugar kills weeds

Question
I have read on this website that sugar, put down at a rate of 4-5 lbs. per 1000 square feet, will effectively kill broadleaf weeds in a lawn.  Does this also work with weeds in perennial flower and shrub beds?  Vegetable beds?
Thanks for your answer.
P.S.  I know it does not "kill" the weeds per se but feeds the critter in soil or changes the chemistry of the soil in some way.  What I would like to know is does it really work, and under what circumstances.  The 4-5lbs per 1,000 sq feet seems like a very minimal amount to have any effect.
Thanks again!

Answer
Dianne:

I can not answer questions about suger in the landscape.  I have no experience with that material.

The dosage may work fine.  In a soil nutrient cycle, a small change in chemistry, structure or boita will alter the growth environment to a larger extent than the conributing factor.

To find out how, query a research database of the ASES to see if any of those scientists have measured sucrose as a change factor.  ASES = American Soil Ecology Society, a multi-discipline research organization with professors from many notable universities.

Professor Millard seems to be extremely active in this regard:
