wild violets

Question
Hello Ronald,
I have been trying to rid my lawn of wild violets for years. I have tried all of the big box store herbicides (Scotts, Ortho, etc.) to no avail. I tried a Weed B Gone product with Triclopyr (8%) and that left them looking wilted for a time but they came back even after a repeated application. I hope you can help. They are expanding year after year.
Thank you in advance.
John

Answer
You seem to have done all the recommended chemical applications. There is abundant evidence that it is a persistent weed and persistence on your part is what is going to gain you the advantage. Concentrate on timing of application. You want to apply the chemical when the violets are at the stage when they are most vulnerable. You also want to apply the chemical when the weather and other conditions are suitable for it to work best. When these two stars are in alignment, you will see good results.
I suggest one more option -  "Round up" concentrate, with labelling for wiper application. The wiper is essentially a sponge on long handle. The sponge is dipped in the concentrate and allowed to drain until it will not drip readily. The weed is wiped with the concentrate and that's it. It will slowly die. If a strong dye is added, then any mistakes are easily spotted and corrected (pruned). Hope this helps.
