Question
How do sod harvesting machines work? Is it possible to harvest a piece of sod without a machine? If so, how?  Thanks for any help you can spare.

From one curious person to another:I have often wondered the same thing.Here is what I do know:Sod is VERY expensive to install.Sod is grown in large fields just like any cash crop. It is best to use a machine specifically engineered for that purpose.They have a roller type blade that you actually ride on like a lawn mower.It has a variable rate adjustment on how thick to cut the sod. They do,I THINK make a hand held sodder but I personally have never seen one.Of couse it is not as expensive as a machine.
