Sod in NY

Question
Is it ok to sod in October/November? or is it to late in the year??

Answer
As with Seed, you get optimal results when you install a Lawn of Sod in Fall or Spring.  The ideal, warm Soil temps contribute to best success rates this time of year.  Some people even do an installation in Summer, although you really have to know what you're doing and the failure rate is sickening.

Sod farms will be happy to sell you Sod any time between mid-Spring and a light freeze, which is at least a month away in our region.  I don't like the idea of waiting THAT long -- those roots need to sink into real Soil before a hard freeze -- but if your weather today was anything like Long Island's, where it was in the 70s, it is not too late in the Season to Sod.

Just make sure you go through all the steps and don't cut corners: Rake and grade, unroll, roll for good soil contact, water. All of this should be done over a nutrient rich soil base FREE OF CHEMICALS and amended with a high-Phosphorus slow-release boost from ground Bone Meal for a long, beautiful, Green life.
