No water out of sprinkler heads

Question
Hi Jeff,
We have an underground sprinkler system that was working great until we had road work done.
Everything on the display is working fine...time to start..time to stop. It goes from one station to the other, problem is the water will not turn on to come out of the sprinklers.
Hubby cleaned out the area around the valves, now when we open the main water valve, we can hear the water running constantly, but nothing is coming out of the sprinkler heads.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
The problem sounds like it was caused by the work on the road.  I will assume that the work crossed over the waterline or the valve wires.  If when you try to operate the system manually you hear water but no water to the sprinklers, then you probably have a broken water line somewhere between the main valve and the sprinklers or the sprinkler valves.  Since you didnt mention any visible water, you will have to do some investigation to find the problem.  Also, the irrigation line could be crushed or flattened by the road work, so much so that water will not flow out.  There is also the possiblity that the wires to the valves were affected by the road work.  In this case the controlled could still work OK, but the valves will not work.
