Recommended reading for first timer?

I am considering adding irrigation to our lawn and would like to do it myself.  I want to do it right the first time and am not in a hurry. Will you recommend some literature to get me started with the process, equipment and tool selection?

Good question.
There are a number of DIY help guides available. Some for free others are a few dollars. Rainbird's website has a design guide that is fairly good. Another good resource is: http://www.irrigationtutorials.com/sprinkler00.htm
You might check with some of you local contractors. Many in my area provide DIY design, parts and help in you get into a problem. Many DIY customers I've sold systems to tell me my price was cheaper than the big box store price. A lot has to do with having the right parts and knowledge.
